WHO WE ARE
Eastwood Secondary School is situated in the suburb of Eastwood a semi-urban settlement on the North-East side of the city. The school was built in the 1980’s to accommodate 800-1000 pupils and opened its doors in June of 1983 with only standard 6 and 7 the equivalent of what we know today as grade 8 and 9. The school opened during the apartheid dispensation under the banner of Department of Coloured Affairs in the House of Representatives.
The school evolved quickly and increased the accommodation of other grades year on year. We had our first standard 10 ( grade 12) in 1986. The school was attended by mostly the community that surrounded it and had very talented learners even though Eastwood was classified as a socio-sub-economic suburb that catered for the coloured community of the city.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
15 February 2022
Good Day All
On the 22 December our school buildings were totally destroyed by a destructive hailstorm in the Eastwood area of Pietermaritzburg. The hail stones were so large that they made enormous holes in the already fragile asbestos roofs of six of our buildings (23 classrooms, 4 HOD offices, 1 administrative office block, female learner toilets).
The ongoing heavy rains from that day to date has caused the ongoing collapse of ceilings, flooding and total exposure of the aerolite and asbestos which poses a health hazard to our learners, teachers, teacher assistants, administrative staff and cleaners. To add to this, our storeroom that stocked our stationery was flooded and quite a bit of our supply of stationery and photo-copy paper for the year was destroyed. All the desks and chairs in classrooms that had roofs were damaged with the ongoing rain.
These desks are swollen and full of mould. Our staffroom was also gutted and tables and chairs also damaged by collapsed ceilings and heavy rain. We are currently housing our educators in a marquee that serves as a makeshift staffroom that we have hired that must be returned by the 17 February 2022 as the cost to extend the rental agreement will be too great for the school to bear. Since school’s reopened our school were not able to bring back all learners and much teaching and learning time was lost and will continue to be lost as the groups that are rotating will never catch up with lost time. To add to our woes, we are already a severely disadvantaged school serving four informal settlements in the vicinity. The only secondary school in the community. Collection of school fees is an ongoing hassle. Various attempts have been made to request the Department of Education to reduce our quintile ranking but this has not been granted.
We launching this “FundMe” initiative to call for help as we will not get any or much from the custodians of our building. It would be highly appreciated if ALL our friends, Acquaintances, ex-learners, parents and good Samaritans could provide assistance to our school with regards to the following.
We therefore invite all to donate in cash or kind or in any other way possible. If at all possible, direct purchase and delivery to school will be a great help.
1. Ceiling boards
2. Aerolite insulation fibre
3. Desks
4. Learner Chairs
5. Outdoor benches for learners
6. boxes A4 80g Paper
7. Glass window panes
8. Teacher tables
9. Teacher chairs
10. White board markers (Black/Blue/Red/Green)
11. Black Pens
12. Red Pens
13. Standing Industrial Fans (Classrooms and mobiles are very hot during summer)
The list is extremely long and we won’t have space to list it all. We are passionately requesting help of any kind. We have projects that has been set aside due to lack funds not being available … like the building of wall-fence at the back and side of the property to improve security all round as we remain soft targets for criminals and break-ins. We are hoping for a favourable response to our requests.
Any assistance will be highly appreciated.
Thank You and God Bless Mr LK Solomons Principal
